President Lyndall Harrison said that the decision was not taken lightly.
"Even with our Covid plan in place, we considered the unknown risks to the 100 plus volunteers, the garden owners, the business owners of the village and the entire Millthorpe community to be too great," she said.
"The Delta variant of Covid 19 is proving much more contagious and virulent than previous strains and we definitely don't want to be the event that endangers the lives of our community.
"The medical and scientific view at the moment, is that the current position is not changing any time soon."
Mrs Harrison said that an early decision would help the gardeners involved and provide a cost saving for the committee.
"If we were to go ahead, we need to start spending on brochure design and printing, and advertising across several forms of media," she said.
"These funds are normally recouped from ticket sales, but are lost if we pull out later."
While the ramble is a celebration of nature, Mrs Harrison sees science as being the answer to future events.
"We sincerely hope in 2022 with a more advanced and organised vaccination program in place, we can again safely showcase the rich garden culture in which we all live," she said.
