Work on a new median strip on Lords Place, between Summer and Byng streets, is expected to begin this week with the construction of new kerb, guttering and footpaths on both sides of the block now all but completed.
Orange mayor Reg Kidd said the new median strip is part of designs to make the city's CBD more pedestrian friendly by improving traffic flow, also providing better connection between the main street and the Civic precinct.
"Once completed, the wider median strip will be the centrepiece of this street, with plantings of shrubs and trees."
Work will begin from the Summer Street end of the block and the road will still be open to traffic, however parking on the western side will impacted as work progresses.
Eventually there will be no parking available on the western side of the street but drivers will be able to park on the Robertson Park side, with barriers and signage along with traffic control to be placed in the area.
Cr Kidd also invited the community to put forward their opinion about the revitalisation of Lords Place one block down, between Summer and Kite streets, at a community forum on Tuesday, July 13.
A revamp of that block is one of the next projects in council's second phase of the FutureCity upgrades and Cr Kidd encouraged any business owners or residents to share their thoughts.
"We have made great progress so far and are already enjoying many of the projects completed in phase one, including improved footpaths and lighting, public art, outdoor entertainment events and the popular Summer Street fairy lights," Cr Kidd said.
"But FutureCity is about much more than appearances, it's about supporting our businesses ... and making the CBD a place where people want to be. It's important to remember we're not starting from scratch, the SJB urban designers (have) given us a great starting point.
"It's up to the community to take that vision on and work out what it means for this section of Lords Place. That's why I encourage all interested residents to come along. We want to know ... what vision you have for the space going into the next 20 years."
The community forum will be held from 5.30pm to 6.30pm in the Council Chambers at Orange Civic Centre, numbers are limited and RSVPs are essential. To book your spot contact Ellie Bryce on 6393 8028 or 0428 632 613.
