Mayor Cr Reg Kidd has called for a report into how often the crossing is used and whether it should be removed.
He told last week's council meeting the lights were largely only set off by 'young people on bicycles' riding past.
Those lights are virtually a waste of space
- Cr Kevin Duffy
"Most of the time when they turn red it is someone burning past, a young person on a pushbike or whatever, [who] presses the lights and takes off," he said.
"The students of that school are not allowed to go to the shops on Bathurst Road."
Cr Kevin Duffy said the crossing might be better used if it was moved to the nearby Glenroi Avenue intersection which was busy.
"Those lights are virtually a waste of space. They would be used a lot more, and a lot more efficiently, if they are moved up," he said.
Cr Duffy said it was becoming increasingly harder to turn right into Glenroi Avenue from Bathurst Road because of traffic.
However Cr Joanne McRae said the report should look at wider use by the community seeking to cross Bathurst Road.
"I'm not sure pulling out a set of lights is the headline we want," she said.
"I'd be more willing to see there be a review of accessibility from the south side of the highway to the north side.
"Since those lights have gone in we've seen a significant change to the highway with the medical centre growing at Wellness House. We also have a new development there with Taco Bell.
"There aren't many points at which pedestrians can safely cross that highway."
