The 45-year-old Orange man was yelling and screaming outside a residence that his mother shared with his brother at 8.30pm on January 30 this year.
The man is not named to protect the identity of the victims.
The offender was armed with a knife that had a 25 centimetre curved blade and another adapted weapon that consisted of an axe handle with a metal blade attached to the end.
The victims shut and locked their front door due to fear of the offender who yelled, "I'm going to kill you" and "I'm going to jump through your window and kill you".
He banged his knife of the railing outside the residence and hacked and chopped at a rosemary bush and continued to threaten his family, who called the police.
Gillman left the weapons in a neighbour's kitchen and the neighbours handed them over to the police.
The man was charged with two counts of intimidation and threatening injury with intent to commit an indictable domestic violence offence.
Magistrate David Day convicted the man and gave him an 18-month Intensive Correction Order, which is a community-based custodial sentence.
The sentence requires rehabilitation and an apprehended violence order was issued requiring him not to approach his mother within 12 hours of drinking alcohol or taking illicit drugs.
Solicitor Gerry Stapleton said the man's brother had since moved away and the offender was in custody until February 11. Mr Stapleton said while on bail the man had camped and paid the RSPCA to care for two of his three dogs because he had not been allowed to return home due the proximity to his mother's address.
"The behaviour of [him] on the night appears to be somewhat bizarre," Mr Stapleton said.
"He overdosed on some prescription medication two days before, he went to hospital and he was still feeling the after affects of that."
