Orange's Cured plans for artisan food, workshops, masterclasses

Cured's Stefan Birmili has lodged a development application with Orange City Council to take over an adjacent empty shop to make smallgoods and have tastings and workshops to complement his meat products business.

It would add to the salads, health foods, liquor store, coffee shop and ice cream/lolly shop plus Harris Farm Markets' extensive food range including fresh seafood, businesses that already occupy the arcade.

The business would employ three-five people.

"The proposal involves the continued use of [the current shop] for the retail of smallgoods," the DA states.

"The proposed use of [the adjacent shop is] for the manufacture of smallgoods, as well as workshops and tastings from time to time.

"Minor alterations and internal fit-out works [would] render the tenancies suitable for the proposed use. In conjunction with each other, the continued use of shop 27 for the retail of smallgoods and the proposed use of shop 28 for the making of smallgoods would represent an artisan food and drink industry."

Shop 28 was previously occupied by a shop selling fashion and gifts.

"The immediately adjacent tenancies are all food and beverage focussed and include Harris Farm Markets, Herba Salata health food restaurant, The Lane Cellars liquor store and Scoop Wholefoods.

"The proposed artisan food and drink industry would complement this mini-precinct of unique food and drink offerings."

Apart from manufacturing smallgoods in the new shop Mr Birmili has plans to involve customers in the operation through masterclasses and workshops.

"Typical activities may include demonstration of the process, testing and tasting of recipes and products, product education, serving ideas and the like."

It is proposed the work would be done in two stages. Fitting out the second shop and starting smallgoods manufacturing on a small scale would occur before the full planned operation was started.

The DA states the smallgoods manufacturing would occur from 7am-6pm Monday to Friday. It is on public exhibition with council until Tuesday April 13.
