About 20 entries were submitted for the main prize, and over 50 for the Primary and Secondary School sections.
The Acquisitive Art Prize is being judged by Robert Stephens from Canberra's Aarwun Gallery, and the students' work by Orange artist Joy Engelman.
Former gallery owner and Cabonne councillor Libby Oldham, who was hanging the pictures at the RSL on Wednesday, said she was impressed by the standard of entries.
Council said the art prize, in its second year, aimed "to foster a sense of identity, pride and place in Cabonne".
People's Choice voting will be open via in-person submission at the exhibition, or online submission through the Cabonne Council website, from 11am on March 27. A vote costs $2, and the winner will receive $1,000.
The winner of each category will be announced at an awards evening on April 8.
