But unlike her hair, it grew into something much more.
Kylie Shelker took part in the World's Greatest Shave to raise money for raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
The charity helped Ms Shelker's sister - who is currently in remission - during her battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Prior to taking part, she described her sister as "my idol" and said if she could "raise money to help find a cure so we don't have to watch others go through this traumatic time then that would be amazing."
Last week she finally got the chop after raising nearly $2,000.
"I'm loving the shaved head," she said.
"I get a few stares from people passing me in the street and the shops, but it doesn't bother me at all."
The feeling she gets from knowing she, like many others around the country, have contributed to the vital cause is something to celebrate.
"Knowing I have helped so many families fighting blood cancer to get through the day with one less worry feels amazing," she said.
"I actually forget that it is shaved until I see people staring at me. I can't imagine myself with hair now."
