Hairdresser Jody Thornberry said she was concerned that when upgrading works at the oval were completed more youngsters would use the park and want to cross the road and be put at risk.
She has called for a speed bump or other traffic measures to be installed to slow cars down to the 50 km/h speed limit.
I just worry about children being hit
- Jody Thornberry, business owner
"What if a ball goes on the road?" she said.
"I was really happy to see them using the oval but my only concern is kids wanting to come over to the shops," she said.
"They [cars] come speeding along here. They are going way above 50 km/h."
Ms Thornberry said she noticed about 15 cars come past the site early in the morning and many were speeding.
"It needs something to slow them down. I just worry about children being hit."
She said she had spoken to Orange City councillor Glenn Taylor about her concerns.
Cr Taylor asked at council's latest meeting for the City of Orange Traffic committee to consider a island in the middle of the road to slow drivers down.
"We are going to be putting a toilet facility across the road from the shops there," he said.
"We are going to be heavily encouraging junior sporting clubs to use Perry Oval and this is going to have a lot more activity around there.
"There is going to be, hopefully, a lot more traffic going across that street.
"Maybe put a pedestrian refuge between the shops and the new toilet facility so there is a point where pedestrians can cross.
"It gives that psychological [suggestion] to drivers who want to tend to speed that the road is actually narrower than it is because you've got that traffic island in the middle of it."
Cr Taylor said Ms Thornberry had told him there had been an increase in cars speeding along that section of the street.
"They seem to think because of that open stretch, there are only houses on one side, that they can put their foot down," he said.
Cr Taylor has been advocating for Perry Oval to be upgraded to encourage sporting clubs to begin re-using it and said he was pleased the work had begun.
"It is looking great, absolutely fantastic. The oval is looking really splendid at the moment," he said.
