Leiam Kyle Orcher, 23, of Oxley Street, Bourke had been in custody since April 28, 2020, when he appeared in court via an audio visual link from jail.
According to a summary of information, a Volkswagen Golf was stolen from an Orange address overnight on March 15, 2019.
The locked car was under an annex within a fenced back yard and the car key was kept in the victim's bedroom.
The victim noticed the car was missing when they got up at 8am. They then discovered the car key and their watch and wallet had also been stolen from a dresser in their bedroom and the back door had been damaged.
On their way out of the property the thieves struck a pillar damaging it and a rim on the car.
Orcher and a co-accused took turns driving the stolen Volkswagen from Orange to Bourke where it was abandoned outside the town.
A passer by reported the car when she saw it stopped with the hazard lights on and two men tried to flag her down but she kept driving and phoned police.
When the police arrived they found the car locked and the men had gone. Orcher and the co-accused's dna were found on the steering wheel and the passenger seat head rest.
Magistrate David Day sentenced Orcher to a two-year jail term with a 12-month non-parole period but backdated the sentence to April 29 giving him a possible release date of April 28, 2021. He took into account Orcher's age, a breach of bail and his criminal record.
"He was on parole for an aggravated break and enter," Mr Day said.
"He's got an appalling record for stealing peoples things, he's a thief, he's a dishonest person."
Orcher is appealing the severity of the sentence in Orange District Court but Mr Day refused to grant him bail for the appeal.
