The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) gave the Pfizer vaccine the green light for use on Monday, approving it for use in people aged 16 and over after it met strict standards around safety, quality and efficacy.
[Monday's] approval is another big step forward for the Central West, particularly in the protection of our most vulnerable people.
- Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee
The vaccine will be provided free to Australians and will be rolled out in five phases over the coming months with a priority group expected to receive the first of their two does, administered at least 21 days apart, in late February and early March.
"[Monday's] approval is another big step forward for the Central West, particularly in the protection of our most vulnerable people," Mr Gee, also the Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education, said.
"The approval of the vaccine is an important step in the fight against COVID-19 and comes after a rigorous and independent assessment, which shows it meets Australian standards for safety, quality and efficacy.
"Outside of wartime and the Great Depression, it's hard to think of a worse year for our country than 2020. We've had drought, fires, floods and COVID-19.
"The news of the vaccine approval lets us start the year with hope and optimism that there are better times ahead.
"While this vaccine is a welcome milestone, we have to remain vigilant - so if you have any flu-like symptoms, please go and get tested."
While the vaccine has been giving provisional approval and expected delivery dates set, they are subject to shipping and distribution, with Pfizer expected to confirm final dates in the coming days.
The Australian Government, states and territories, regulators and the health and medical sectors are working together to finalise arrangements under the Australian Vaccination Strategy and detailed roll out plans.
