After receiving a short but torrential downpour in the CBD around 11am, more heavy rain is forecast for the city this afternoon, too.
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.
On top of Orange, other locations set to be affected include Walgett, Dubbo, Parkes, Canberra, Goulburn, Tamworth, Gunnedah and Narrabri.
The State Emergency Service is recommending people keep clear of creeks and storm drains and don't walk or ride a bike through flood water.
The warning says anyone trapped by flash flooding should seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
