Luke James Peters, 37, of Ophir Road, stole the $20 chain on September 18.
Solicitor Mason Manwaring said Peters was a farmer who saw the chain as useful and it was returned.
"He's a magpie, he saw it as useful and then it was returned," Mr Manwaring said.
Peters was in custody for other matters when he appeared in court via an audio video link.
Magistrate David Day said stealing the chain was poor impulse control.
Mr Day convicted Peters without further action for stealing the chain and said unless his bail situation for the mother matters change he will be in custody for a while.
