Back from harvest up a Moree, Greer took little time to find his groove with the new ball taking 8-17 in an incredible 14-over spell against Kinross at KWS Main Oval.
Greer is an an-Kinross cricketer and has played plenty of games at the main oval on the school, but Saturday's effort for Cavaliers is a career best for the right-arm quick.
Greer's figures also top City skipper Ed Morrish's mark of 8-56 as the best figures of the BOIDC season to date.
Cavaliers are in the box seat after bowling Kinross out for 56 - Hugh Britton also 2-21 - after declaring about 100 in front of the students and then sending them back in late on day one.
The Kinross top order gallantly dug in though, and will resume on day two next week at 1-30 but remain at the bottom of an Everest sized mountain to climb in order to avoid an outright loss to the competition leaders in round six.
Greer said Cavaliers' plan at the start of the game was to bank maximum points out of its clash with Kinross, and his eight-wicket haul looks as though it'll be the catalyst for just that.
It was a nice personal feat, getting eight wickets ... but we're in a good spot heading for an outright, and that's the main goal.
- Cavaliers' quick Charlie Greer
"It was nice to get back out there and get some rhythm early on," Greer said, Kinross lost its first wicket on 20 and then preceded to lose 10-36 in the rout.
"They hung on there for a while but we went out there with intentions of an outright from the start. I just tried to run through them as quick as we could.
"It was a nice personal feat, getting eight wickets ... but we're in a good spot heading for an outright, and that's the main goal."
Cavaliers have a couple of former Kinross players in its ranks for 2020-21, with Britton joining Greer as the new-ball bowlers while Will Luelf is another former student now donning a maroon cap.
Greer said he's endured plenty of days like the one his old club did on Saturday.
"I know a couple of the older boys in that Kinross side on Saturday, but they're about the end of my generation," he said.
"It was good to be out there with Britto and Will. We've all been there once, in one of those games with Kinross.
"I love being part of Cavs now though."
Greer's return to the competition leaders will be for the rest of the BOIDC season, too, as the maroons look to atone for last year's runners-up finish.
