It's an interesting, personal exercise, to try to come up with a single word that describes this year. (Unfortunately, "bloody awful" definitely counts as two words!)

It's also interesting to look back to March, when experts were predicting that Australia could expect between 15 and 50 thousand deaths as a result of COVID-19.
How fortunate we have been compared to other countries, is reinforced by some of the most recent figures related to positive cases and deaths.
A news report giving these figures, makes very sobering reading. ("Global COVID cases top 50m: Sydney Morning Herald, November 10).
The nation that seems to attract most attention is the United States, with more that 9.8 million cases and more than 237,000 deaths. Their recent, daily figures were 126,000 positive cases and more than 1,000 deaths from this virus.
A number of other countries also continue to have alarming figures.
For those Australians who have family members and close friends living and working in other countries, this continues to be a very worrying time.
Here in Australia, I hope that we remember these facts and don't become too complacent.
