The Molong man pleaded guilty and was fined $110 in Orange Local Court for common assault, and he was convicted and placed on a 12-month community release order, which is one step up from a non-conviction, for behaving in an offensive manner.
According to information presented to the court, the man confronted his ex-girlfriend about 5pm on August 16 in Bank Street, Molong, because he was unhappy seeing her with another man and because she had been drinking.
He then wrestled with the other man before he was restrained and led to a car where he unsuccessfully attempted to strike the woman.
Magistrate David Day said the assault was at the lower end of the scale.
"He's not going to jail for this, he has not crossed the custody threshold, he is very young and very foolish," Mr Day said.
"It certainly could have gone a lot worse if you hit her and injured her."
