If there's one thing Cassandra Trengove achieves by shaving her head, she hopes it's this: even during tough times like COVID, it's important to keep helping each other.

Before COVID hit, Ms Trengove had been planning to fundraise for Variety Australia by cutting off her hair and donating it. But with so many people now facing economic hardship, the single mum said she's putting less emphasis on fundraising and focusing on the charity's need for hair donations.
"My hair won't make a full wig. It'll need to be combined with somebody else's hair. It takes more than one person's hair to make a wig, which is why they (Variety Australia) push for donations of hair," she explains.
"They need heaps of donations ... they need at least two to make one wig and there's a lot of sick kids out there."

Ms Trengove's own hair, which she began growing more than seven years ago when financial hardship meant she didn't have the funds to tend to it, is now more than 40cm in length.
"I had a son and became a single mum and had no money to upkeep my hair," the 37-year-old explains.
The single mum who, in addition to being a marriage celebrant, also has her own balloon business, joked that she's going to be as "bald as the balloons" she sells.
While it remains to be seen "whether or not I can actually pull off a bald head", she said it's worth it.
A spokesperson for Variety Australia explained that, depending on thickness, it could take anywhere between 10 to 20 ponytails to make a single wig. All donated hair must be at least 35.5cm long and completely natural and free of dye.
"When we talk to the families of kids, especially girls, they talk about how much the wigs have helped their self-esteem," the spokesperson added. "Wearing a wig means often means they don't need to constantly explain why they have no hair. They can just be themselves."
