Solicitor Nico Rump said John Charles Simpson, 27, from Bletchinton, had attended a birthday party the night before he was caught drink-driving.
"This is Mr Simpson's first drink-driving matter that's before the court," Mr Rump said.
"He has a problem with alcohol and he acknowledges that."
Mr Rump said Simpson also had a moderate disability that impairs his judgement, particularly when he has been drinking alcohol.
"He didn't understand how much time he needed to wait before he could legally drive," Mr Rump said.
According to police, Simpson came to police attention when they were patrolling in Nyampaa Street, Murrin Bridge at 7.10am on July 26 and saw a Toyota sedan travelling on Lachlan Valley Way.
Police said at the Simpson slowed "incredibly" when he saw the police car at the intersection.
They stopped his car and Simpson said he did not have his P2 licence with him.
The police officer could smell alcohol on him, he was slurring and his hand movements were sluggish.
Simpson told the police officer he drank close to a carton of beer the night before she he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and was taken to Lake Cargelligo Police Station.
Simspon was breath tested at the police station and returned a high-range reading of 0.227.
He told police he was drinking bottles of full-strength beer from a cooler at the party and could not specify how many beers he drank.
Magistrate David Day gave Simpson a 12-month community correction order, disqualified him from driving for six months, he placed him on a 24-month interlock order and he ordered him to complete 50 hours of community service.
