Power has been restored to central Orange after residents and businesses were left in the dark on Thursday morning.

The central business district was affected as power went out at 166 properties around Summer, Anson and Sale streets just after 11pm on Wednesday night.

An Essential energy spokesperson said an authorised contractor working on the electricity network "inadvertently ruptured a burst water main", resulting in the flooding of the underground electricity network.
Power was switched off at 11pm while the water was drained, with power back on at 8.30am.

Maps of the outage shows it includes Woolworths Orange, Orange City Centre and many other businesses and properties on the southern side of Summer Street.
When the power went out in Orange it was -3.5 degrees at 6am with a 'feels like' temperature of -6.0 degrees.
