Roger Ellis bought the still-life painting by artist Loretta Blake after it was awarded most outstanding at a Beverly Allen exhibition about 10 years ago.
"It means a lot to me and now I would like to donate it to the hospital for everyone to enjoy," Mr Ellis said.
"The people who come here all have a bit of a problem so it's nice to have something inspiring."
He said the painting was the type that needs a special place to put it in but he now lives in a cottage and felt the painting belonged on display at the hospital instead.
Roger Ellis was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011 and was one of the first patients to receive radiation treatment at Orange Health Service.
"I'm so thankful for the wonderful care and treatment from the hospital over the years," Mr Ellis said.
"I wanted to give something back to show my appreciation.
"The hospital people have been wonderful to me.
"I hope when the staff look at this artwork they will know how much I appreciate them."
Mrs Blake used to exhibit with Beverly Allen at the time of the painting purchase and was "thrilled" about having it on display at the hospital.
"I always look at the hospital artwork that's on loan from the regional gallery when I come up here," Mrs Blake said.
She said her husband had treatment at the hospital so it was good to see her work donated.
Mr Ellis said that although the painting is displayed among artworks on loan from the Orange Regional Gallery, Mrs Blake's painting was for the hospital to keep.
Mr Ellis is still undergoing treatment and head of cancer services Dr Rob Zielinski said Mr Ellis has also previously been a willing participant in the ENZAMET cancer trial.
Dr Zielinski was also grateful for the donation.
Hospital general manager Catherine Nowlan said the picture is on display in the oncology department so staff and patients can enjoy it for many years.
"We are very appreciative to Roger for his generous and thoughtful donation of this beautiful artwork," she said.
