Waratahs' FC is still up in the air regarding its Western Premier League involvement in 2020

Skipper Ryan Sinclair says the club's set to hold a meeting in the coming days to gauge the interest of players and even though the majority of the members are keen to play, a handful of guys have already pulled the pin on the winter of football.

"It's a bit up in the air at the moment," Sinclair said.

"We're calling a meeting over the next couple of days to see who's still 100 percent interested. We want to make a decision this week so we need to find out who's going to commit.

"There's already been a couple of guys who have said they're not playing so we've got to touch base with the ones who are interested."

Sinclair was one of the first local footballers to express his concern about the lateness of the season and he feels like it's the time of the kick-off that's causing players to simply shut up shop until next year.

"Some people just don't give a stuff about it because we're starting so late." he said.

"I'd be understanding if we weren't able to play. It would be disappointing but we can't just throw together a squad if not everyone's going to fully commit.

It would be easier for the side to get motivation if they were back on the pitch but due to the restrictions that are still in place, Sinclair's men haven't even met up for a kick yet.

"We haven't done too much... I only just started the group message back up to see who's interested," he said.

Not only does that lack of training make it easier for players to forget about the sport, it puts athletes at a higher risk of injury and if the Waratahs are to enter into the WPL this season, they'd only have a few weeks to get into game shape, something that Sinclair touts as a tough task.

"A lot of these blokes work for themselves and if they get injured and have to stay at home that's bad for them," he said.

If the men in blue do end up entering the competition, this year's WPL is set to feature nine teams: Panorama, Barnstoneworth United, Waratahs, Lithgow Workmen's FC, Macquarie United, Orana Spurs, Bulls (Dubbo) and the Parkes Cobras. South Dubbo Wanderers had originally nominated for the competition at the start of the year but opted to withdraw during coronavirus lockdown in early April.

Technically speaking, Dubbo Bulls enter the season as three-time defending champions, having won the last three grand finals from 2010-2012.

The last grand final saw Bulls defeat hosts Waratahs 3-1 in the decider at Orange's Jack Brabham Park, with a double from Nelson Flick and another by Scott Fox securing the result for the Dubbo side.
