Governor-General David Hurley announced the Queen's Birthday 2020 Honours List, recognising 933 Australians on Monday.
Included in the Order of Australia list are:
- 710 recipients of awards in the General Division including: three Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), 50 Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), 200 Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and 457 Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM)
- 28 recipients of awards in the Military Division: (three AO, 12 AM and 13 OAM)
- 128 meritorious awards.
"In this list we see all the positives that are in our community - we see the great ideas, we see the hard-work, we see the love and compassion for fellow human beings - it's a microcosm of Australia," Governor-General Hurley said.
"This list recognises a group of outstanding Australians who have made a contribution to their community, to Australia globally or domestically. Their efforts have been noted by their peers, they've been nominated and assessed independently as worthy of recognition."
"On behalf of all Australians, I congratulate them and thank them for their service contribution to our country."
Governor-General Hurley said the awards continued the positive trend towards gender parity with women making up 41 per cent of recipients in the General Division.
"We are working hard to achieve parity between male and female nominations and to increase the diversity of nominations in other areas," he said.
However he said the system was driven by nominations.
"If you know someone that is worthy, look at what you need to gather and how nominations are assessed. People cannot be recognised if they're not nominated and that has to be driven from the community."
The AC is the highest honour in the General Division.
The three recipients are Tony Abbott for his political service; Belinda Hutchinson AM for service to business, tertiary education, scientific research, and philanthropic endeavours to address social disadvantage; and Naomi MiIgrom AO for philanthropic leadership and support for the promotion of the arts, architecture, design excellence and cultural exchange, and to business.
