Delly eyes Olympics beyond NBA uncertainty

But the Boomers regular has a broader perspective, with an eye firmly on next year's Olympics and confident its delay will serve the Australian team well.

A decision on the re-launched NBA's format could be reached next week, with one prospect being only the top-16 sides will feature as they fast-track straight to play-offs.

"We're not in the play-off picture so even if the NBA does announce it's coming back we still don't know if we're going to be included, which is tough," Dellavedova said in an Instagram interview on Saturday.

The Cavaliers point guard is notching less minutes (14.4) and points per game (3.1) this season compared to his average across a 400-plus game career, with Cleveland 19-46 and last in the Eastern Conference.

But the distributor and tenacious defender still looms as a central piece for the Boomers in 2021.

And he's eyeing another shot with the same Boomers core after steering them to fourth at the 2016 Olympics and last year's World Cup.

"I'm excited for 2021 because (before the postponement) we were going from the World Cup, to a 2020 NBA season and then straight into an Olympics," he said.

"So having this extra time now until the next season starts and then going into the Olympics will give everyone a chance to get their bodies into great shape and be ready to go.

"I know all the boys are motivated as ever to win a gold medal."

Andrew Bogut's decision to hold off re-signing with Sydney Kings in the NBL - or any club - leaves his Tokyo participation in doubt.

But in Dellavedova and NBA regulars Patty Mills, Aron Baynes and Joe Ingles there is a core for returning coach Brett Brown to work with.

NBA All-Star Ben Simmons, who plays under Brown at Philadelphia, could also be thrown into the mix after withdrawing from the side's World Cup bid.

Dellavedova has been careful not to scare him off.

"He has so many people in his ear, I'm sure, but he knows we would absolutely love to have him," he said.

"This time he's been able to get healthy and ready for a play-off run, so hopefully we can get him on board."
