After completing his apprenticeship studies, Mr French now works as a labourer in arboriculture for council and he said he didn't think he would make it this far to be a finalist for the award.
"I'm still in shock to think I would be considered a finalist," he said.
"Council and Skillset have provided resources and trading opportunities to further myself with horticulture studies and to work as a labourer."
Mr French said being a finalist means that if a student wants to do something they can put their mind to it and achieve that goal.
"This opportunity encourages me to be a role model for Indigenous students who are struggling at school," he said.
"I feel honoured to share my experience and advice for those who are uncertain about which pathway to take."
Training Services will announce the category award winners through an online event on July 1.
