Brad Draper is hoping Seawatch can find the front of the field on Sunday

That was Brad Draper's assessment of his five-year-old gelding as Seawatch is set to take on a seven-day turnaround in the $20,000 Parkes Services Club Benchmark 58 Handicap (1000m) on Sunday, the fourth race of the day at 2pm.

Seawatch is coming off a disappointing effort at Wellington on Sunday and Draper knows there's a certain way his horse needs to be ridden in order for him to have success.

"He needs to be in the first one or two... that's his racing pattern," Draper said.

"He's not too comfortable racing in the field and last week Matthew [Cahill] was given a few options and he probably didn't take the right one. Matthew didn't hurt him the other day though and that's why I've backed him up quick.

"He's a funny bugger... he's still a bit on the big side so I reckon in the next couple of races we'll see the better of him."

Finding the front of the park is manageable from an inside barrier but becomes tricky when you're drawn wide and that's the challenge facing Matthew Cahill and Seawatch as they'll start from slot 11 on Sunday.

The story of Seawatch is an interesting one and after changing ownership in 2018, Draper's had nothing but lovely experiences with his horse.

"He's an ex [Gai] Waterhouse and [Adrian] Bott horse," he said.

"They broke him down twice and got two of his knees done and he's done well... he's run a few placings but you've got to get him in the right place.

"He's a lovely animal. A lot of people have asked what he's doing post-racing because I think he'd make a great companion."

While the barrier is tricky, the surface and the distance looks the goods for Seawatch as the good four track is ideal, as is the 1000m dash.

"He's an out and out sprinter. I think could stretch him to 13 or 14 hundred metres but that would pull him up," he said.

The oddsmakers have Seawatch listed as a $23 prospect which looks fair as there's a bit of talent floating around in fourth race of the day and Draper weighed on on two of the shorter priced contenders - Escebee ($15) and Testing Times ($2).

"I think Mark Milton's (Escebee) will do well... he's drawn well and has some pace," he said.

"Anytime a Bjorn Baker horse (Testing Times) comes out here it's going to be hard to beat too."

Seawatch will jump at 2pm from the Parkes Jockey Club.
