Outside a few whispers, there's nothing set in stone regarding a James Maloney NRL comeback.
It's been reported that the 33-year-old, who's currently on a French lockdown, is in the sights of the Canterbury Bulldogs who have cap space after relieving the disgraced Jayden Okunbor and Corey Harawira-Naera of their duties.
Canterbury would be a logical fit for Maloney as the blue and whites are in dire need of a half and have been for as long as anyone can remember.
Kieran Foran is set to don the number six jersey when he recovers from a shoulder injury but outside that, the Dogs have Brandon Wakeham and Lachlan Lewis as their current playmakers which probably isn't a good enough combination to push for a finals spot.
It's hard to foresee the St Joseph's Sheahan product signing at any club outside NSW which rules out six of the 16 NRL clubs.
Most Sydney teams are set in the halves but there's one squad that plays at Brookvale that could do with an experience but run-happy second receiver.
Dylan Walker is currently holding down the five-eighth role for the Manly Sea Eagles but certainly isn't a blue chip playmaker and does more damage when he's running with the ball rather than distributing it.
The Sydney location makes sense and so does the combination with Daly Cherry-Evans as it would allow walker to push into the centres, replacing either Brad Parker or Moses Suli.
Rounding out the potential landing spots would be the St George Illawarra Dragons and while this feels like the least likely of the three mentioned destinations, there's a need for stability within the spine at Wollongong.
Ben Hunt and Corey Norman look set to be the side's halves for the remainder of the season but with the amount of changing coach Mary McGregor's done, you wouldn't be shocked if Norman was trialed at fullback again before the season's over, leaving a vacant five-eighth position for a returning, two-time premiership winning number six.
