The runoff from sustained rainfall on the weekend meant water quality in Molong Creek and Borenore Creek dams was compromised.
Cabonne Council said on the weekend a alternative would be set up and spokeswoman confirmed on Monday it would be the pipeline connection to Orange, commissioned in February.
"An agreement was reached late last year for Cabonne Council to purchase water from Orange City Council, in alignment with their water restriction levels," she said.
"[The council is] in the process of switching to the Orange supply at present and an update on the boil water notice will be given when the process is complete and the quality is improved."
The agreement allowed Cabonne Council to buy up to 160 litres of water per person per day as an emergency measure should it be needed.
Water quality improvement is expected to take three days.
