New data from Afterpay has revealed the highest number of users in Australia and New Zealand come from Melbourne, Auckland, Gold Coast, Perth then Orange, and 90 per cent prefer debit to credit.
Regency Jewellers marketing coordinator Emma Crisp said Afterpay was used both at the Summer Street shop, which is currently shut due to coronavirus, and at the online combined Regency Jewellers and Everly Jewellers online site.
"Online probably about 90 per cent of customers will use it," Miss Crisp said.
"I think it's just because its such a good budgeting tool.
"In store it eliminates the need to laybuy, you can see your items and take them home instead of having to come in to make payments."
Miss Crisp said the laybuy and Afterpay periods were about the same, and the Afterpay limit has been increased from $1000 to $2000, which she said was good for the business and reduced the need for people to use a credit card.
She said Regency Jewellers introduced afterpay in the store before Christmas but it introduced it online more than two years ago for online sales.
"It's taken off quite recently, we've had a lot of support as well from Queensland and other states," Miss Crisp said.
"Our online business is going quite well for people know they cannot come in and support us and knowing they can support us online."
The Afterpay data comes from the annual Autumn/Winter 2020 Trends Report, which is based on purchasing insights and trends from across the world.
According to the report 3.2 million, Australians and New Zealanders used the platform. The average age is mid-thirties, with most shopping about 1pm with a particular affinity for accessories.
Only 55 per cent shop from a mobile device compared to 75 per cent in the US and 81 per cent in the UK, and almost 30 per cent use a tablet, which is higher than among the other two groups.
Globally the top 10 cities for Afterpay shoppers are Melbourne, Los Angeles, Chicago, Brooklyn New York, Houston, London, Philadelphia, Auckland, San Antonio and New York City.
This years Autumn and Winter trends from the report are:
- Top colours: Tonal dressing, with shades of grey and beige (with pops of blue and pink)
- Styles for the season: Puffer coats will be this winters' trendiest style for a warm layer
- The next it dress: Knit dresses are a big hit for winter
- Prints for the cooler months: Logos are making an 80s style comeback and are among the top three prints for the upcoming season, along with graphic motifs and chequered patterns
