The Catholic Church parish in Orange has launched a program called G'Day Orange where volunteers will call people every second day on a buddy system to check how they are going.
Father Greg Bellamy, parish priest for St Mary and St Joseph in Orange said it was important to reach out to people in these times.
"We may need to be 'socially distant', but that doesn't mean we can't be 'spiritually close," he said.
"We are currently in a lock-down that may stretch on for months. Many people in Orange and its surrounding district may be feeling anxious at the moment, particularly if they are living alone and are unable to get out for essentials such as food and medication.
"There are also many people who want to do something to make a difference for their community but don't know what they can do during a lock-down."
Fr Bellamy said they were looking for more volunteers but the hardest part of making the scheme work was to inform people needing help that the scheme existed.

"G'Day Orange' already has over 20 volunteers before we have even begun," he said.
"Getting volunteers is not going to be the challenge. Our biggest challenge is getting the word out to community members who are isolated and inviting them to be involved.
"In particular, many older members of the community may not be online or they may be reluctant to put themselves forward, believing there are other people worse off.
"If you know someone who is living alone on your street and would appreciate some social contact, please tell them about 'G'Day Orange' and help them to make contact," he said.
Fr Bellamy said volunteers would report back to the parish office when contact had been made.
"If there is an identified need, the organisers can then connect people with other support services who can help with professional counselling, picking-up shopping and medication, or providing food parcels," he said.
