With eight centres nationwide - including an Orange gym that's the gold standard of martial arts in the Central West - Ian and his son Ben are doing their best to combat the COVID-19 crisis with online training sessions via Zoom.

Pollet's Martial Arts members from Orange, Bathurst, Dubbo and Forbes have been checking in to take part in any of the six weekly classes and Ian says the transition from the gym to the living room has been a surprisingly smooth one.

"Zoom is very successful for us at the moment," Pollet said.

"Obviously a lot of people can't leave their houses so we're trying to keep people safe and keep them active.

"Students can tune in on their phone or computer but most people have been using their TV. People have been training in their living room, garage, patio or whatever's safe for them."

The new format is delivering six classes per week, ranging from karate on Monday to Muay Thai on Tuesday to meditation and breathing exercises on Saturday.

While lots of people have enjoyed the downtime that the COVID-19 outbreak has caused, Pollet knows the lack of activity is negatively impacting a lot of people and his goal - along with his son Ben - is to pick people up during a time of need.

"The unknown has really slapped us in the face. We've got to deal with this together and be mindful of each other," he said.

"Our ambition is to keep people fit and stop the boredom. The more we can do, the better it will be for everyone."

"A lot of people don't understand that I've got 50 years of teaching experience," he said.

"I've stood the test of time. I've learned a lot from a lot of great masters and I've got a lot of information to explain to people and how useful it can be for them."
