Last Saturday, Ekert smashed 72 with bat - a personal high for City Colts this season - as his side went on to declare at 8-351 before Rugby Union went on to finish the day at 0-48.

He followed that up a day later with a figure of 33 while representing Bathurst in Western Zone Premier League and while those figures aren't incredible, it's one of best outings in representative duties in 2019-20.

But his figures and Colts' overall total on Saturday may have come too little too late.

Rain is forecast for Bathurst on Saturday, meaning it's very unlikely that Colts and Rugby may not get the chance to finish their match.

And with no wins in the opening six games to start the season for Colts, there's little to no chance they'll recover in time to qualify for finals.

"We knew something was going to click, but we were hoping it was going to be five weeks earlier," Ekert said.

"With the weather, you can't help the weather unfortunately. We put ourselves in a good position to win the game but if weather persists, it's just another game that slips away."

Ekert was one of three Colts batsman that finished with scores in the 70s - opener Henry Shoemark (75) and skipper Matt Stephen (70 not out) were the other two.

"Unfortunately, we've been busting our arse but we've been getting out from silly shots. We've got a good batting order and we showed that last season," he said.

"I can't really put a finger on it [why Colts have struggled]. Most of our guys play rep cricket and we perform on a Sunday for it but come Saturday, things haven't been going our way.

"It might be a spectacular catch or a decision we're thinking shouldn't have gone against us. It's simple things like that you need to go your way, but we've got zero of that this season.

"To put a finger on it precisely, the guys train, the guys work hard, we all do. Unfortunately, we weren't scoring runs prior to this game, which we 100 per cent should've been.

"It's like quicksand, the more you try, the deeper you get yourself into. Everyone in our team is a competitor and hates losing, so when we lose we're all angry. That's because we want to win.

"We're a team that wins and not one that loses and when we do lose, we don't cope well as a unit. We're trying to learn from it."

Ekert said Colts can win if the rain stays away.
