Residents will have the chance to see for themselves later this month when EnviroCom runs bus tours of the Ophir and Euchareena Road resource recovery centres.
The free tours, on Wednesday, January 22 and Saturday, February 22, aim to encourage people to keep as much waste as possible out of landfill by showing how materials are recycled.
EnviroCom environmental consultant Jo Smith said the firm ran programs in schools, but the tours were targeted at adults.
"The garden waste and food recycling side of things is newer so everyone will see how it's processed and shredded up - it will be really interesting for people," she said.
Recycling bin contents are taken to the VISY materials recovery facility in Smithfield for processing, organics are sorted into four tunnels where they are transformed into compost, while rubbish is compacted and baled in plastic to minimise the space it takes up and stop material from blowing away.
Attendees will meet at the Orange City Council car park by 9am, to be returned about 12:45pm.
They must wear closed-in shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
Tickets can be booked here for January 22 and here for February 22.
