The 7.9-kilogram eastern grey roo, nicknamed Bernie, is now being cared for by Orange WIRES volunteer Melissa Ross, after he was found near Clarence following the pre-Christmas fires.
Photos of Bernie being rescued were shown on the British newspaper The Sun's online page.
Mrs Ross said his wounds had been cleaned and he was on a course of antibiotics but it was likely the damage to his foot pads is so great he will lose them. However, she said they would grow back.
Mrs Ross said WIRES workers had been allowed into the fire zone to try to locate injured wildlife including kangaroos.
"There's been about another half-dozen sighted. They're already terrified and try to get away," she said.
One of the kangaroos that did hop away was Bernie's mother.
Mrs Ross said they were still hoping to find her but failing that when Bernie was well enough he would be released into the same area in the hope they could re-unite.
She said Bernie was showing signs of improvement.
"He must be feeling better as he got up this morning and helped himself to a sweet potato," she said.
If you see injured wildlife call WIRES on 1300 094 737.
