A nearby resident made the call to the Canobolas Zone brigade at around 11pm after seeing smoke coming from the Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area.
Four tanks and three different crews were disbanded but the fire was believed to have been extinguished before they arrived. The operation was called off at 1am.
RFS Assets and Infrastructure Officer Steve Smith said following on from the 2018 bush fires at Mount Canobolas a rapid response was thought to be beneficial to all.
"We are extremely concerned that people would even think of starting a fire near bush and grass lands in these extreme conditions," he said.
"It's just very dry out there."
The incident was reported to police overnight and an investigation was believed to be underway.
