Mr Byrnes will give a presentation at the Orange City Library on Tuesday, attempting to address how these underage soldiers got passed the authorities.
Using letters and photographs, The Lost Boys is a deeply personal account of these young boys war time experience, written by an experienced researcher.
Mr Byrnes joined The Sydney Morning Herald in 1976, reporting from various corners of the world for a decade before specialising as a feature writer and film critic.
He was director of the Sydney Film Festival for 10 years, until 1998. In 2007, he won the Pascall Prize, Australia's highest award for critical writing in the arts.
This book is the result of a lifelong interest in WW1.
