Down 12-4 at half-time, Thompson scored the only try of the second half and booted the conversion before stepping up at the death again to kick the match-defining penalty goal and ensure the Dragons snatched a point out of their longest road trip in Group 10 after a 12-all draw with the Cowra Magpies.
With 20 seconds left on the clock, the Dragons had one last crack at Cowra's line and skipper Jack Littlejohn darted down the eastern touchline and found space before being brought down by Magpies ace Jeremy Gordon.
Gordon laid on Littlejohn for an extended period though forcing referee Nick McGrath's hand.
I think everyone's enthusiasm is there and aggression is good, I just think sometimes we go a little bit too far.
- Cowra skipper Blake Tidswell.
Gordon was sin-binned for a professional foul and the resulting penalty, five metres in from touch and about 20 metres out, was nailed by Thompson after the siren, resulting in the draw.
Frustrated Magpies captain, Blake Tidswell said his side's discipline and fifth-tackle options need to be looked at ahead of the finals.
"I think everyone's enthusiasm is there and aggression is good, I just think sometimes we go a little bit too far," he said.
Littlejohn said he expected a grinding contest with the black and white.
"They're a solid footy side, they don't do much wrong, they just get through their sets and get to their kicks, and they've got some class players in their halves and their fullback," he said.
He also noted lack of discipline from his troops after the referee had to separate the two sides a number of times during the match.
"That wasn't our best performance that's for sure, I say it every week, our discipline's just not good enough to win against the good sides anyway," he said.
"We dropped too much ball, we gave away too many penalties."
- COWRA MAGPIES 12 (Lee McClintock, Claude Gordon tries; Caley Mok 2 goals) drew with MUDGEE DRAGONS 12 (Nathan Orr, Ben Thompson tries; Ben Thompson 2 goals)
