That was the message for Bathurst St Pat's leading into their men's Premier League Hockey clash with the Wanderers in Orange on Saturday, and simple they kept it in a 3-1 win over the hosts.
Wanderers put up one of their better performances of the season, but were just a step below the visitors, who scored early before putting the game to bed just after half time.
St Pat's hit the scoreboard after Lachlan Howard was tied up with Wanderers keeper Jake Skelton, with the ball spilling out to Trevor Weal who duly converted into the open net.
We were trying to keep it simple and play the basics, a few calls went our way but we took our opportunies.
- Bathurst St Pat's coach Neil Howard
However, Wanderers hit back a few minutes later after Bailey Ferguson creamed a strike from a corner straight through the Bathurst defence to equalise.
The side held strong until the back end of the second quarter, where Brent Naylor sidestepped Skelton to find the back of the net to make the score 2-1, and added a second goal to his name after half time with a brilliant strike from a tough angle.
As much as Logan Dolbel's side tried to hit back on the scoreboard, St Pat's were simply a class above the hosts, with slicker ball movement all across the field.
Nothing St Pat's did was complicated, which was reflected in what coach Niel Howard said was the aim - to "keep it simple" and concentrate on ball control.
"We were trying to keep it simple and play the basics, a few calls went our way but we took our opportunies," he said.
"We had a loss last week and I just wanted to go back to basics.
As a whole one of our better performances so we're not disappointed with that.
- Wanderers striker Bailey Feguson
"Our transfer of the ball needs to be a lot better, we seemed to pump it down the right all the time when there was so much space on the left so I want to focus on using that space."
Striker Bailey Ferguson said his side was happy with the performance and was convinced a win wasn't too far off for the Wanderers.
"We're struggling to get results but it'll come, it's just getting to training and doing the hard work there and we'll get results, it's starting to pay off," he said.
"As a whole one of our better performances so we're not disappointed with that and we know the win's going to come sooner or later, we've just got to put the hard work in."
Ferguson said his side went down the middle to much, playing into the hands of the strong Bathurst midfield, but outside of that he the side wasn't sure what needed to flick.
"We don't know yet, we're trying to get organised and figure stuff out, that was a solid effort from us, a lot of positives for us," he said.
"We created lots of chances which was good."
