The opening game of this month's Pro League leg before the inaugural tournament's finals, the visiting Hockeyroos overcame a sluggish start to defeat the hosts 3-2.
Trailing by a goal at half time, a trio of second half goals ensured the three points landed in the Hockeyroos' account, moving Australia up to third place on the Pro League's standings.
The Aussies now have 24 points from 12 games and overtook Belgium on the ladder following the one-goal win over China.
We know we're going to need to be better ... but it's great to fight and grind out a win.
- Hockeyroos coach Paul Gaudoin.
"It was a very difficult match in pretty tough conditions here in China," Gaudion said post-match.
"Credit to the girls, they fought back in the second half, created some chances, started to get some belief and were able to manage a win which was pleasing."
Australia's goals didn't eventuate until late in the game but once the Hockeyroos found the back of the net via Maddy Fitzpatrick's stick more goals came in a flurry.
Emily Chalker and Rosie Malone both nailed chances in the 49th and 56th minutes respectively to rocket the Hockeyroos out to a 3-1 lead, Chen Yi China's sole goal-scorer until Xu Wenyu converted a late penalty that turned out to be nothing more than a consolation goal.
Gaudoin pointed out improvement would be needed once the European leg starts on Sunday.
"We know we're going to need to be better against Great Britain in London in a week's time - but it's great to fight and grind out a win."
The Hockeyroos' next match is against Great Britain in London on Sunday 9 June.
