The Eagles were leading the contest 31-15 in the second half when Lions captain Josh Tremain - celebrating his 200th game for the club - was punched in the head by a Cowra player and collapsed to the ground.
The referee, Mitch Dwyer, stopped the game, before abandoning it altogether as police and NSW Ambulance personnel were called on to the Cowra Rugby Ground playing surface.
A police spokesperson said a record of the incident had been made, but at this stage it was not being treated as a criminal matter.
Orange City president Steve Stone, who was not at the ground at the time of the incident, refused to comment on altercation, but said he had spoken to Tremain's father, Willie, about the club stalwart's condition.
"He's conscious," Stone said on Saturday evening.
"He's got some headaches, but he's come through. They're waiting on doctors and other things, and looking at whether they can transfer him to Orange or not."
Cowra Rugby Union Club declined to comment on the incident.
