The new building will have the capacity to accommodate 30 children initially, with the potential to increase that number in the years to come. It will include bathrooms onsite which are suitable for three- and four-year-olds, and two separate rooms for different age groups.
Glenroi Preschool, which is operated by LiveBetter, currently provides early learning to 20 children within an old classroom at the school in Maxwell Avenue.
It is really important that every child gets equal opportunity when their education journey starts
- Steve Stanton
LiveBetter General Manager Community Services Steve Stanton said one of the problems with the current facility was there was no dedicated outdoor play area with direct access to the rooms, which meant the children had to walk through the school grounds at recess and lunch.
He said after nine years in the old school rooms, they hoped to have the purpose-built classroom up and running by the end of the year, and increase their opportunity to provide education for students from all backgrounds.
"It is really important that every child gets equal opportunity when their education journey starts," Mr Stanton said.
Glenroi Preschool has a high number of Aboriginal children and a high rate of special needs children attending, which is supported through regular visits from occupation therapists, speech pathologists and other specialists.
The Minister for Early Childhood Education Sarah Mitchell was joined by Western NSW parliamentary secretary Rick Colless at the school on Tuesday to announce the grant, which is part of the state government's $6 million Start Strong Capital Works program.
Ms Mitchell said the preschool service was an important asset to the school and the money would make more places available for more families.
The current preschool rooms will be re-purposed by the primary school for parent-and-student play groups.
