It wasn’t on the footy field or in the gym: it was at Broga.
Sankha Yoga instructor Shell McCahon introduced the mostly first-timers to a male tailored yoga class at One Strength, which will now be a regular fixture on the centre’s timetable.
If you don’t stretch you’re more prone to injury. It’s something that dudes don’t do enough of.
- One Strength owner Lyle Davis
Favouring a flow style of yoga, Mrs McCahon said the men's classes are “strong and energetic” while aiming to let attendees experience the benefits of relaxation.
“They will be challenged, it’s not all fluffy, it will test them,” she said.
She said while men once saw yoga as “an airy fairy thing” that attitude has changed, so when One Strength owner Lyle Davis approached her, she agreed Orange was ready for Broga.
Mr Davis said with his background in body building he sees men who have “trained for seven years and stretched seven times”.
“I know guys who can’t touch their toes,” he said.
“If you don’t stretch you’re more prone to injury. It’s something that dudes don’t do enough of.”
Mr Davis said while the physical benefits are indisputable, he was recently sucked into yoga for its meditative qualities.
“I struggle really hard to switch my brain off. When we finish a class with meditation I’ve had some of my loudest mates say how they are totally relaxed and not thinking about a thing. It gives the brain a break for a bit,” he said.
