The 36 year old, from Batlow in the Riverina, was on a bushwalk with family and friends at Borenore Caves, about 15 kilometres west of Orange, when he fell into the opening.
Members of the public attempted to help the man, but emergency services were called for and arrived at the scene at about 1.30pm.

Because of the depth to which he had fallen, and the narrowness of the cave, he was trapped for more than three hours.
Central West police District Chief Inspector Peter Atkins said extracted the severely injured man was a difficult undertaking.
“It was a very small, tight area,” chief inspector Atkins said.
“He had injuries and they needed to get the equipment down 10 metres.”
Once lifted to the surface, the man was flown via helicopter to Orange hospital where he was treated for a fractured shoulder and ribs.
Chief inspector Atkins issued a warning to all people walking in bushland to take extra care and to pay attention to any warning signs.
