But when a group of touring university researchers adds in laser-glowing diamonds then it becomes much more approachable and even fun.
A team of postdoctoral researchers and PhD students from Macquarie University visited Orange High School last week as part of a coast-to-coast tour they are conducting to spread the word about this branch of science.
Matthew Van Breugel, Reece Roberts and Thomas Guff from the university demonstrated aspects of quantum technology and physics research.
Their visit included giving people a hands-on experience of measuring individual atoms inside a diamond, gaining a virtual tour of the physics lab, and learning about what it's like to work as a physicist.
They headed to the Parkes Observatory after Orange on their way to Perth for a major annual physics workshop and conference.
