Weymouth’s 113 wasn’t enough for Mitchell to overcome the visiting Macquarie, who chased down Mitchell’s 9-244 in 46.4 overs on the back of half-centuries to Koda Sissian (58), Jesse Sprang (63) and Ben Rosenbaum (66 not out).
The latter two put on 111 runs for the fifth wicket before Rosenbaum’s brother Kieran (three not out) joined Ben to see Macquarie across the line.
In the under 12 game at Brooke Moore Park, Mark Sheather proved the difference as Mitchell rolled the visitors for 94 in just 16 overs.
Sheather took six wickets and a hat-trick on his way to 6-13 from four overs, while Blayde Burke finished with 2-11 from three and Archie Griffith and Cooper Stephen took one each.
Stephen made the initial breakthrough for Mitchell when removing the aggressive Nate Bayliss for 19 off 17 deliveries before Sheather tore through the Macquarie line up.
His hat-trick began by bowling opener Austin Hunt for 18. He sent the next ball crashing into the stumps as well to remover Cooper Townsend then trapped Angus Boland leg before wicket.
In reply Hugh Taylor (12) and Tom Blowes (39 not out) put on a 50-run opening stand and the hosts never looked like missing the total.
Despite the best effort of Cooper Townsend (2-14 off 3.2) for Macquarie, Mitchell crossed the target with seven wickets and 28 overs in hand with Blowes and Tom Hitchenson (1 not out) unbeaten to see the hosts home.
The under-14s didn’t have as much luck as a 106-run stand between Harry Quinn (90) and Hugh Sienkiewicz (49) formed two-thirds of Macquarie’s total of 154.
Angus Parsons and Connor Whale both took 3-25 from seven and eight overs respectively to bowl the visitors out in 42.2 overs.
Despite being 1-53 part-way through the chase, Mitchell struggled to challenge the total and finished with 9-116 from 50 overs.
The results leave the under-16 side at the bottom of the Western Cricket Zone ladder without a win to their name from two games, while all three sides in the under-14 competition have a win apiece. Mitchell sits atop the table in the under-12s.
