Mark Ivanoff, 34 of Beech Crescent, faced Orange Local Court on Monday charged with malicious damage after he broke the department’s glass door in Summer Street on August 2.
Police said Ivanoff entered the office at about 2pm, inquiring about housing because his parents did not want him staying with them.
A staff member found him a place at a refuge in Dubbo, but Ivanoff was not satisfied, saying it was impossible because he needed to report daily to Orange Police Station as part of his bail conditions.
The staff member repeated there was nothing else available – still angry, Ivanoff stood to leave, kicking the door on his way out and the door’s hinge broke.
Later in the afternoon, Ivanoff was at the station and police asked to interview him.
He told police the lack of options made him angry, but displayed remorse when he told them he did not realise his actions would break the door.
Solicitor Gerry Stapleton admitted his client’s previous record did not help him.
“He’s had at least one property damage conviction as an adult,” he said.
With Ivanoff already remanded in custody awaiting proceedings for other offences, magistrate David Day acknowledged the man would “not be doing much” until next year unless his bail status changed.
However, he pointed out Ivanoff could have changed his bail address and reported to Dubbo Police Station instead.
“He seems to have a fairly short fuse,” he said.
“It wasn’t the department’s fault the only property was at Dubbo, it wasn’t the department’s fault he had to report to Orange and it wasn’t the department’s fault he couldn’t make an application to have his bail varied.”
Mr Day handed down a 12-month community corrections order with no supervision, however Ivanoff would be required to repay $99 for the repairs to the door.
