Beginning last year and run in conjunction with NAIDOC week celebrations, the Canobolas Rural Technology High School run event welcomed school-aged children from as far as Dubbo, Narromine, Coolah and Mudgee to contest mixed netball and touch football competitions, in seniors and juniors.
Mudgee High School completed the double in the juniors with victory in both the netball and the touch football.
While Orange schools dominated the seniors, with Canobolas proving too classy despite the strong wind and warm conditions to take home the major prize in the netball and Orange High taking out the honours in the senior mixed touch football.
For organiser Elise Woods the day was about much more than winning though.
“It’s a good chance for a lot of the kids to catch up with family that travel over for the day,” Woods said.
“And the kids love sport so getting them out and active on a day like this where we celebrate their culture is important.
“We’ve got a lot of community services here as well and that gives the kids from across the region a chance to develop those strong community links.”
