ODJCA president Dave Cumming said most of the money will help build new nets at Nashdale Public School, while some would go towards improving nets at Orange Public School and at Kinross’ Sally Kennett oval.
It’s the second year in a row the ODJCA has set aside $5000 for school nets across Orange, with the money raised from the two Westerns NSW under-13 and under-15 cricket carnivals held in January.
Cumming said the Nashdale nets would go a long way towards holding more games at the school, with a CYMS under-11 side largely made up of Nashdale players.
He also said it was aimed at encouraging more students to play the sport.
“We know most junior cricket starts in the backyard or at school, so if kids are able to roll out of the classroom and play at lunchtime hopefully they play with the ODJCA,” Cumming said.
OPS’ nets will have new synthetic turf while the amount given to Kinross would help finish new nets.
“They put a huge amount of money and resources into junior cricket in Orange and this was a way of us acknowledging and appreciating that,” he said.
