The Californian funny man will perform his ‘We need to talk’ show on November 15.
Reviews for the show – which has been a hit on stages as far apart as Melbourne and London – indicate his Orange audience is in for a cracking night.
The performance starts with a Keith Richards' dirty opening riff from ‘Can't You Hear Me Knocking’ before Barker bounces onto the stage.
(This is not to suggest Barker is the Rolling Stone of comedy, but it's fair to say he is the Keith Richards of Indian-American-Australian comedians.)
Barker’s's been killing it for decades – he first appeared at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2000.
He's laid back but edgy, with clean and simple timing, and he keeps producing original material that resonates with a broad audience.
He's laid back but edgy, with clean and simple timing, and he keeps producing original material that resonates with a broad audience.
There is a neat thread that flows through the routine, that could be summed up as a series of hilariously astute – but never cliched – expositions that he describes as '”life hacks”.
Helping with the authenticity is the use of topical and home-town references, and the audience is engaged in a way that is simultaneously pre-planned and spontaneous.
While his show isn't as edgy as others, Barker gives his audience value for money with highly-entertaining, polished observations and storytelling.
He has an exceptional skill for weaving previous jokes back into the show and he will pick up if the audience aren’t quick enough, so pay attention.
Like the Stones, Barker endures because he keeps finding ways to reinvent himself without ever deviating too far from what has served him well over the years.
It continues to work well.
Arj Barker will take to the Orange Ex-Services’ Club stage on Thursday, November 15.
Tickets cost $44 and are available at www.oesc.com.au/shows.
