IT’S been an interesting two weeks culminating in a very busy long weekend. Most accommodation in Orange was booked out, especially for the three-day netball championships at the PCYC courts.

Mardi Aplin informed me that we need more courts due to the increasing demand locally, and the prospect of attracting state and possibly national events.
The City of Orange Golf Championships were also held over three glorious days at our three golf clubs, while next week there will be a veterans event. Recently Orange City Council received an approach from Golf NSW about the possibility of council sponsoring a feature event in the future.
Obviously that will considered in line with the process and procedures we have for the numerous sporting, cultural and other events.
Congratulations to the Redhead Hunt 4HD organisers – in particular Rachael Brooking and her team of volunteers – on a great day at Wade Park on Saturday. This was only the event’s second year, and I’m sure it will become a must-do event in the future.
I had a very early start Saturday at Lake Canobolas for the traditional breakfast and wetting of the lines with the city’s keenest anglers. Orange’s trout fishing club has ex-state, -national, and -world champions in its membership, all there to help anyone who wants to become involved.
It always brings back fond memories for me of my dad and uncle, and the treasured time I had with them at the lake and surrounding streams.
Last week saw the opening of the Women’s Shed at Wangarang. It’s a fantastic set up being supported by a very enthusiastic group of ladies. Well done to all concerned.
This year will mark 100 years since the end of World War I. We have planned a reenactment of that special day.
The ‘Lead The Way’ concert organised by North Orange Rotary to raise funds for Guide Dogs Australia was just unbelievable and highlighted the incredible talent we have here in Orange. Over 400 people attended the concert, superbly hosted by one of our own, Marion Arnold.
(Take note our Federal member: Orange needs that conservatorium. A funding announcement soon would be a much-appreciated Christmas present.)
Coming up we have Armistice Day on November 11. This year will mark 100 years since the end of World War I. We have planned a reenactment of that special day at the old Orange Council Chambers (which now houses OCTEC, behind the statue of Private John Patrick Hamilton VC.
Orange had a huge crowd on that day 100 years ago, and I’m sure the Central Western Daily will have stories and photos leading up to the big day. Congratulations also to our small but vigilant WWI advisory committee which has been working along with so many events over the last five years, all leading to the big day next month, which marks the end of a terrible time in our nation’s history.
Last week saw a couple of year 12 graduations as students ramp up their preparations for their forthcoming High School Certificate exams. I have had the honour of being at a number of these functions, and can assure you we have many impressive young people who will be our future leaders.
Best of luck to all, and success is assured in whatever path you choose because you have already shown the commitment required.
This week we welcome another cohort of young medical students to Orange, and a working group from Tourism NSW.
Finally, the blossoms around Orange are breathtaking at the moment. Please take some time to enjoy.
