The woman was flown to Westmead Hospital, but Central West Police District chief inspector Peter Atkins her condition improved overnight.
The head-on collision left her trapped in her vehicle just after 4.00pm.
The road was closed for some time after the accident.
Chief inspector Atkins said police were still trying to piece together what happened.
“Police believe one of the vehicles has crossed to the incorrect side of the road for an unknown reason and investigations are ongoing,” he said.
