Chris Thompson and Daniel Quarmby both walked home with positive outcomes after Quarmby’s debut fight in the ring and with Thompson just in his second bout.
Thompson won his bout in just the first round, knocking out opponent Matt Stewart in the opening salvo of his 75kg Masters fight.
Quarmby, who defeated Hamish Stanton in his fight later in the evening, said Stewart looked “real wobbly” after Thompson’s right hook to the head, and the referee called the bout.
“There was no was he could continue,” Quarmby said.

Quarmby’s own fight was against fellow debutant Stanton in the 81kg division, which he won on points after three two-minute rounds.
“It was a really tough fight… I was happy to come away with a win,” he said.
“We were hitting each other hard and I really enjoyed it, I was really nervous before the fight but once you get in there and get punched in the head a few times the adrenaline tends to get going and you get into it.”
Quarmby said coach Dave Farr had set the goal of two wins from the two fights, in determination to show the city-slickers they could still fight well in the bush.
“We’re a small gym from a country town, we wanted to do well and represent gyms like ours, that we can go in there and win fights with skill and not throwing haymaker punches,” he said.
We were hitting each other hard and I really enjoyed it.
- Daniel Quarmby
He’s only recently taken up boxing, too – Quarmby said “I mainly do jujitsu and boxing was just another part of (training at) the gym”.
However, he kept coming back to it.
“I sort of wanted to have a fight, it was a bucket list thing and my goal was to win it.”
Quarmby said he’d “probably” come back for another fight.
“We’ll have a break and come back next year,” he said.
